3Y0J News - Station Survey

Dear 3YØJ club sponsor

Progress for 3YØJ is going very well! We have now launched a propagation survey (station configuration) to better understand how we succeed working the small pistols.

Our goal would be to get as many participants/DXers as possible in this survey to build a good baseline of DXers and their station configuration.

Please forward the survey to your members so we can build a good baseline.

Survey can be found at our website Latest News | 3Y0J DXpedition

Currently roughly 1100 unique DXers have registered! More info below

Thank you for supporting us!

3YØJ propagation survey – station configuration

By participating in this poll you intend to provide 3YØJ with accurate information about your station setup to aid 3YØJ understand what your station configuration looks like.

Please give as accurate information as possible, we have intentionally limited the categories to three

- small pistols (max 100W, vertical/dipole)

- regular station (small 2-3 el yagi, simple wire on lowband max 1 kW)

- big gun (super/expert station, 1 kW+, high gain yagis, 4SQ/beam lowband)

No amplifier or yagi is allowed in the small pistol category. We’re looking for any kind of station to participate in the survey, whether small pistol, regular or big gun. The information will only be used to display to the operators once you work them what category you belong to - so for them to get a better view of the propagation.

The purpose of the survey is clearly to better understand how the actual propagation is. Based on the survey we will know

- what category of operators we are working (displayed in N1MM)

- relative signal strength between the various categories

- give us an indication when propagation shift

- indicate when we should listen more for weak stations

In addition we will establish a baseline of DX stations (the participants) - hopefully several thousand unique stations will participate in the experiment. During the DXpedition we will not only know if we work a small pistol, regular station or big gun - but we can compare the various stations in our log with the Baseline.

We are working on a script that automatically will do an online analysis of the QSO database, so to display an online parameter indicating if we reach out to the small pistols or not.

Thus

- everytime the 3YØJ operators log a QSO with a station which is part of the DX baseline (the participants in the survey) the respective Indicator (Small pistol, Regular station or Big Pistol) will be updated

- the Indicators will be compiled to a relative parameter which compare the actual stations worked with the DX baseline. This online parameter will give us an indication how well we manage to work the small pistols, and even at a certain continent.

We then need to understand if this is due to the propagation or our operating practice.

We will do whatever we can to reach out to the small pistols!
